The Geology of NW Highlands Geopark

This section of our website provides a brief introduction to some of the outstanding geological features of NW Highlands Geopark, a fascinating story that can be read in the landscape all around you. At different locations throughout the Geopark you’ll find information and interpretation sites to help you recognise and read the signs present in the rocks.

But if you’d like to get started right away, feel free to use this section to browse information on the different types of rock you’ll see around the Geopark and where you can locate them; the geological controversies that raged during the 19th century and how they led to a new understanding of the way mountains are formed; and the unique landscapes that have resulted from billions of years of movement and erosion.
